This collection consists of a history of Liberty Independent Troop written by William Augustus Fleming in 1896, including a roster of troop commanders, 1785-1896, a list of captains of the troop, men who enrolled for six months in the Confederate Army, October 1861 to April 1862, and a list of troop members at the troop's Centennial Celebration in 1886. The history also describes the troop's uniforms, its service in the War of 1812, its service in the Civil War, and summaries of troop meetings, 1872-1896. Also included in the collection is a photocopy of an undated newspaper article outlining the Troop's military record, describing the troop's skilled horsemen, its military service to the Confederacy and to the United States during World War I.

The 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment was organized in January 1863. It was formed through the consolidation of the 1st and 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalions. The men were from the counties of Effingham, Screven, Liberty, Bulloch, Lamar, and McIntosh. The regiment was sent to Mississippi and placed in Wheeler's Cavalry Corps.
